Dress to Apron Tutorial

dress apron tutorial upcycle muslim blog
The photo above shows a project of a dress I turned into an apron.  It was an excellent design to make into an apron for a family friend of mine. Aprons are one of my easiest and most preferable projects for upcycling clothes.

Here is my quick tutorial:

Step 1: Unpick the front of the dress from the back of the dress.

Step 2: Sew up all the hems around the apron.(the front part of the dress is the apron)

Step 3: The neck straps of the dress were sewn together to make one strap to go over the neck.

Step 4: Make waist straps from the spare fabric (back of dress) and sew the straps to the apron.

Step 5: Make a pocket from the spare fabric and sew to the apron skirt.

That was it, very easy, very quick and totally unique!

The style of the dress makes a difference when making aprons. I look at dresses that normally have a wide waistband and that have shoulder straps (not sleeves). Also if a dress already has long straps at the waist for tying in a bow at the back this saves making your own waist straps. I normally sew my own straps if I have enough matching fabric, however straps can be bought in many fabric shops by the metre. The photo I have used for this blog was of one of the dresses that makes this task so quick and easy.

The graphic photo below highlights the areas that I altered.

The photograph below shows an apron I made for my sister using the same technique. Her husband in the photograph is also wearing one of my creations, a simple black apron which I added a funky pocket to and also personalised for him.

Why not give it a go, with the right kind of dress it can be so easy! Other dresses can also be transformed, it just takes a lot longer to do.

Vase Makeover

vase makeover spray muslim blog
Today's post I am sharing with you is an old vase that has been in the family for many years, I think it is even older than me! My grandmother gave it to me as she no longer had any need for it.  It is a good sturdy vase but the design was very dated!  So I decided to have a go with the spray paint.

The photo below is what the vase originally looked like.

I used a can of spray paint that I had in the house. I originally bought this to give my daughter's bike a makeover but decided against it once she had outgrown it!

I took the vase outside and placed it onto some old newspaper and sprayed away. It took about 3 coats and I had to leave a 4 hour gap between respraying. I managed to have it completed by the evening!

Below is a nice before and after photo collage. I now have this vase in my living room.  I managed to buy some really cheap imitation flowers to put in the vase which made it blend in nicely with the room.
