How To Cut Onions Without Crying - Great Ideas

How To Cut Onions without crying - Goggles

I watched a children's cooking program on the TV the other week and this young girl was wearing some special onion goggles! I had never heard of these before and thought what a brilliant idea. Then I went online and saw the price of these goggles and thought they were a bit to pricey for me!

So me being me, I tried to think of an alternative cheaper way and after realising how these goggles worked thought about using my daughters swimming goggles!  I hated chopping onions because my eyes have always been so sensitive.  I also wear glasses for everyday use and I couldn't wear them immediately after chopping onions as I couldn't see properly due to the irritation and tears! To my amazement these goggles actually worked!

Yes I may look a little silly in the kitchen for a couple of minutes - but believe me they are worth it if it means I don't have to suffer!  I have tried this maybe 6 times now and they have worked perfectly and since trying this I have noticed that quite a few people have done this in the past and all agree they work.

In the past I have tried chewing gum when chopping onions, which for some reason it does seem to work occasionally but not all the time! I read on a site that if you breathe in through your mouth it catches the onion gases before they reach your eyes, so maybe the chewing gum part is the fact you may open your mouth and catch the gases!

Has anyone else tried the goggles method or have you got any other solutions for no tears that you would like to share?

  1. I hate chopping onions because of this reason. Hence this sounds very very exciting. Have recently seen someone wearing a helmet and cutting onions lols. There are a few grand ma tips, like dipping the knife in warm water for a few minutes before cutting onions or skin out the onions and keep them in water for a few minutes. But those are not very effective.

    1. Glad you like the idea! It seems a few have done this as a child - I never thought of it as a child probably because my mum rarely cooked with onions!

  7. Assalaam alaykum Karima!

Have you tried any of the homemade Modge Podge recipes out there? There's a few on Pinterest I've seen and thought you'd be the one to know if they work well or not. It would save me some money on some projects and our family doesn't have an extra car so getting to the craft store is hard to do. Jazakiallah khair habibti!

    1. Waalaikum salam, Yes I have made my own Mod Podge, I have never even seen in it for sale in the UK so I have always made my own using internet recipes. Main one being 2:1 ratio so if 8oz glue add 4oz water and mix. Hope that helps.

  8. I ever watch a movie, where they put the onion into a water for a night, to remove the gas inside the onion, so they can chop the onion without crying :D

    1. Yes I have also just heard about leaving onion in a glass of water - I might try that one day if I haven't got goggles handy! Thank you.

  9. Ah, this is so amusing! I usually hold my breath, avoid breathing from my nose, or shut my nose with either a peg (painful, but not worse than crying while chopping up an onion and ruining your eyeliner!) or either tie something around my nose to block out the smell.

  11. Assalaamu Alaikum. Maashaa Allaah lovely blog. Got to know this wonderful space from Umm Suhailah maashaa Allaah. Cutting onions are so important especially in this part of the world so what I do is peel the onions and refrigerate them for about fifteen to twenty minutes and then cut. No tears! Lol just thought I would share this, I learnt this from my mother in law.
