Widening Slippers Tutorial

widen slippers tutorial

My gran needed a new pair of slippers for her recent stay in hospital. Her feet had swollen and none of her slippers/shoes fitted her. I looked around the stores but couldn't find any that were wide enough for her.  I decided the only way was to try to have a go myself at trying to widen some slippers.

I bought the cheapest pair of slippers, they only cost £5.00 from Asda (Walmart). I then experimented on them - they turned out great and my gran simply adores her slippers. The best part was that when her swelling reduced, I simply stitched up the gap again with a few stitches, leaving the elastic in place incase of any further swelling incidents!

The photo tutorial below shows you how to do this:
Step 1: Cut down the middle of the front of the slipper.
Step 2: Add strips of elastic to either side. Stitch sides if needed.
Step 3: Decorate the edges using ribbon. Add decoration like buttons or sequins etc.
Step 4: Repeat with other slipper and wear!

Cap Makeover Tutorial

There are many caps and hats in my household and thought I would like to change some of their styles somehow. Here is one of the caps which I decided to remove the peak and make the cap into a hat! Here are the instructions on how I did this.

Step 1: Unpick all the stitches that are keeping the peak in place, I used an unpicker. The peak should just fall off.

Step 2: Re-stitch the opening with either hand stitches (which is what I did) or with the sewing machine.

Step 3: There isn't a step 3 - just wear your new design! You can guarantee you will be the only one with that style of hat!

I have done this with a few different styles of cap and they have always been so easy to do following these 2 simple instructions!

Tissue Box Makeover Tutorial

tissue box makeover

This post is to show you how to turn a plain cardboard tissue box into a box more easy on the eye.  I have seen some special boxes which you can place over your tissue boxes but they can be a bit expensive and not always the same size as your brand of tissues. So I decided to give my box a makeover. Here is my tutorial on how I did this.

Requirements
  • Tissue Box
  • Scissors
  • Sticky Backed plastic

Instructions

Step 1: Cut a slit at the bottom of the tissue box  - now remove your tissues in one go.
Step 2: Place the box onto the sticky backed plastic and measure how much you need to cover the whole box (excep the bottom).
Step 3: Cut out your pieces and cover the box with the plastic. To make it easier for cutting and sticking, I made the oval shaped opening into a rectangle so that the sticky backed plastic could fold under neatly.
Step 4: Place the tissues back into the box and place some tape underneath to secure the bottom of the box. You now have your box finished!

Once your box is empty you can re-use it again by opening up the bottom and refilling with tissues and close the bottom again. This really is something very easy to do and can make a lot of difference to your home decor.  You can even use alternative coverings such as fabric or other types of paper to cover them.
